Finding your work

Advent word - play
Not much chance of "play" for me today as I was back in work after six days off, but that got me thinking. I love my job even though it's jolly hard work- and you need a sense of humour to work in healthcare! As a team we have to pull together to support each other and there is often a playfulness in how we interact; this was very much the case yesterday. We laugh, we joke and we take the piss out of each other. Knowing we have each other's backs is really important, as is getting a smile out of a colleague and friend on a tough day.
Our Society's rule states that “as our faith matures we come to recognize Christ’s hidden presence everywhere.” That’s because a maturing faith is paradoxically childlike. It is marked by openness to new ideas, points of view, and experiences, all of which enable us to see again our God, who knows neither time, nor place, nor limitation.

On the third day of Christmas...
...I was reminded how epic my job is
You never know what's going to happen on the ward between Christmas and New Year, with less planned treatments the unpredictable happens. After four beautiful days off I returned to work apprehensive but was greeted by a day of awesome colleagues, wonderful patients, one of my most favourite doctors and a LOT of festive snacks. Today I thank God for a job I love and being part of a wonderful team.

Be Aware of Others
Friday was a delightful day. Usually they are notorious for being the busiest day at work but for some reason this week it felt more like a weekend. When we're busy it can feel very solitary, moving from task to task and not being able to chat with colleagues or spend as much time as we'd like with patients.
Yesterday I had time to chat with both and it was a real treat. The team spending time together builds morale and helps people feel valued. Spending more time with patients gives you time to do all the "value added" stuff, or just talk with someone feeling lonely.
I love my job so much, even when it's difficult, and days like this are a reminder of what a tremendous team we have, with the most remarkable group of patients. Part of my routine at night is to pray for the people I've worked with and cared for. Last night my prayers were filled with joy and hope.

Be More Thoughtful
I've been thinking about my friends a lot this week. I don't see them very often but with school holidays looming I'll get to socialise a bit. Being in training and shift changes have impacted on my seeing friends whilst I'm out and about. When we do speak it's often them asking how I am so I often don't know what's going on with them.
To be more thoughtful I'm trying to consider some of the non-material needs some of my friends have right now and how I can help, maybe just by spending time, listening or making them a cuppa.
I'm also continuing to develop my ideas around the needs of the staff I work with, and how these might be met from a spiritual perspective. Helping people feel valued is important in any community - work, family, friends or church.

Save Water
I must admit I seriously considered not blogging tonight- I don't know what to write. From my alarm going off at 5.45 this morning until I hopped into bed at 10.20 tonight my mind has been so focused on work that I hadn't even remembered today's task.
It's hard to deny that work is difficult at the moment but what I've found is that my ordination training gives me strength and a different perspective which gets me though the tough times. I can't achieve any of it in my own strength - I hand it all over to God. And when he asks me "would you be anywhere else?" The answer is always, unquestionably, "no".

Think of Others More
I was actually on the receiving end of today's task as my family did jobs at home I would usually do whilst I was at work. The week being what it has means the house was in even more chaos than usual and my kids and husband did their best to get things back in order.
It was so lovely to come home to find they'd been able to complete some of the tasks that needed doing- it took a weight off my mind and took a bit of my stress away.
To have someone lend a much needed or unexpected hand can make all the difference to your day- we know that as nurses. Someone doing just one thing on your 'to do' list can make the difference between a smooth day and a stressful one.
We're not always good at asking for the help we need- or noticing when others are in need of our help. We need to get better at saying when we're struggling, but also at picking up the ques from those around us who we can help but who may not, like us, be good at saying so.

love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honour.

Be More Grateful
My only aim today was that my colleagues felt appreciated. I wanted them to know that I was grateful for each one of them; who they are, what they do and their place on our unit. I did this with crisps, cake and fruit.
Luke 17:15-16
Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice. He prostrated himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him. And he was a Samaritan.

Be More Loving
Today's task seems so simple but I nearly missed the opportunity. Working back to back 12 hour shifts I miss my kids and wanted to Skype them from work to tell them I loved them in case they were asleep when I got home. My daughter wasn't answering so I tried the phone. No answer. I tried again walking to my car and got hold of my her - she was really happy to hear from me, as were my son and husband. My hubby allowed the children to stay up until I got home so we had hugs and exchanged more "I love yous".
It's easy to tell my kids I love them, so what about the other people I encounter every day? I spend so much time at work but don't spend enough time telling the people I share my working life with that they're loved and appreciated. They might not think I'm very loving when I'm tired and frustrated and unable to help them, but I aim each day to see people as God sees them, and love them as God loves them. Although I'm not always very good at this!!
Ruth 1.16
But Ruth said,
‘Do not press me to leave you
or to turn back from following you!
Where you go, I will go;
where you lodge, I will lodge;
your people shall be my people,
and your God my God.

Sacred Space
Today was a work day. A big change between now and when I blogged during Lent is that my work pattern has changed and now a work day means a 12 hour shift. Not much time to consider Advent.
The LLLA action for today is to make a space to think about Advent. This is really hard- there's no space in my house right now, my garden is usually my tranquil place but it's hard to hang out there when it's quite chilly! I use my dining room as office space and have candles and incense in there but it's a work space. Thinking about this today my car is my sacred space. It's about the only place I am every day where I'm alone, can find silence and find prayer easy. I find it easier to think in my car than anywhere else, so that's my special place. It may not be everyone's idea of a sacred space but it works for me.
Finding or making space during Advent, with all its busyness and the directions we're pulled in, is really hard but it's important for me to take time away from that and make space for God, who often gets pushed out.
Working a 12 hour day it can be hard to make space for God but today has been incredibly special. There's been time to stop, to talk and to connect. The day has been punctuated with small spaces.

What I can I give him
I returned to work today after two lovely days with my family. I went with a heavy heart, knowing that with my shift pattern I won't be spending any real time with my family until New Year's Eve on Tuesday. When I got to work I was reminded of something- I love my job. I love it and I feel privileged to do it. It's not easy, in fact in can be incredibly tough, but I honestly don't think I'd really rather be doing anything else. So, today, I want to celebrate doing a job I love.
